AMB: K-9 First Aid Kit

Imagine walking your best friend down his favorite path on a cool fall afternoon. A slight breeze rustles the leaves as the sun slowly descends on the horizon.........YELP!! Your dog has stepped on a thorn that has embedded itself in his paw....are you prepared?

All to often K-9 medical emergencies crop up when least expected. From simple eye irritations to more serious life threating injuries. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to be prepared at all times.

Below is a list what a basic Dog First Aid Kit should contain:


PAPERWORK

• Copy of Dogs Health Records
• Pet First Aid Manual
• Emergency Veterinarian Phone Number
• Poison Control Center Phone Number


EQUIPMENT

• Muzzle, or Roll of Gauze for making a Muzzle
• Magnifying Glass
• Scissors
• Tweezers
• Nail clippers
• Styptic Powder, Kwik Stop
• Penlight
• Nylon Slip Leash
• Ear Syringe (2oz. Capacity)
• Cotton Swabs
• Cotton Balls
• Clean Towels
• Rectal Thermometer
• Lubricant (ie:KY Jelly)
• Disposable Gloves
• Needle-Nose Pliers or Hemostats
• Grease-Cutting Dish Soap
• Bitter Apple (Discourages Licking)
• (2) Towels or Blankets (1 to Act as a Stretcher - 1 to Keep Dog Warm)
• Cold packs and Heat packs
• Square Gauze (Sterile/Various sizes)
• Non-Stick Pads (Sterile)
• First Aid Tape
• Stretch Gauze Bandage (Sterile)
• Band-Aids


MEDICINE

• Wound Disinfectant
• Triple Antibiotic Ointment
• Antibiotic Eye Ointment
• Eye Wash Solution
• Sterile Saline
• Anti-Diarrhea Medicine (Pet Pectate)
• Buffered or Canine Aspirin
• Diphenhydramine (25mg Benadryl Tablets for Allergic Reactions)
• Cortisone Spray or Cream, (ie: Itch Stop)
• Ear Cleaning Solution
• Re Hydrating Solution (Gatorade/Pedialyte)
• Activated Charcoal to Absorb Ingested Poisons (consult vet first)

This basic kit will enable you to take care of the majority of injuries your dog may receive.

Thanks for the list. I have often thought of making up a kit for my dogs but didn't know exactly where to start. Now I do. Thanks!
