AR: Adopt a Pet! Over 4 Million Dogs & Cats killed Yearly!

Sadly, Over 4 million adoptable dogs & cats are killed each year. If you can rescue one, here is a good place to start!

Best of Luck!

I thought that you were exaggerating. I mean, 4 million is an unbelievable number! When I read the link it contained this:

"Did you know that approximately 4 million adoptable dogs & cats are killed each year due mainly to overpopulation? Did you know that 25-30% of dogs for adoption in animal shelters are purebred? The other 70-75%, of course, are lovable, wonderful mixed-breed pets, just waiting for a chance to be your perfect new friend."

We have a lot to accomplish!

That is so sad. I had no idea the number was so high. Now I understand why most shelters require animals to be spayed and neutered before adoption.

I don't know about neutering a male dog. It seems like cruel and unusual punishment.

I work in rescue and if you want to see cruel and unusual punishment visit your local shelter. While you are there go down just one row of cells and let us know how many behind those bars are unaltered. Or go to any shelter's website and go through their list of available dogs and tell us the percentage of dogs that are unaltered on the first four pages of dogs.

Unless you have a stud dog that you use for breeding, which by the way should be left to professionals
, it is cruel to leave your dog intact and deprive him females. This promotes any number of undesirable behaviors not the least of which is aggression for other dogs. Millions of innocent animals die every year because of human ignorance, greed, vanity, and laziness.

By the way, IMO nobody should breed or buy as long as millions of shelter dogs continue to die. For the first time in my over a half century life, I see great number of purebreeds that are being euthanized right along side the mutts. Enough is enough!!!!

Bustersmom, I certainty appreciate your viewpoint and respect the fact that you are working at a shelter. However, I do not feel that I fit into your description of "human ignorance, greed, vanity, and laziness."

I rescued my dog Bruno and his sister Betsy who were abandoned as pups 3 years ago in a wooded section of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia . My dog does not run loose and lives in my home. When he is around females we go though a few minutes of behavior that is corrected, and he settles down and enjoys the playful company.

As far as neutering him, almost every household in my very large family and circle of friend's want a puppy from Bruno and Betsy's litter, including me, and my sister. When my sister gives her OK we are mating the two. Why because we love Bruno and Betsy and know the intelligence and loving personality of both would be bred into their pups. And the pups will be part of the dogs we love. Just like I want to have children one day when my fiancée and I are married. Sure there are kids in orphanages that need adopting and the world is most certainly over populated. But, I will not neuter or spay my children or Bruno.

It's the dog and cat owners who abandon their unneutered and unspayed animals who are the problem. Not the people who take care of their pets.

Bruno,
Welcome aboard, we are glad to have you on the forum.

You bring up an interesting, and obvious point......that if all pet owners were responsible stewards of their animals, the subject of spaying and neutering would not be such a hot button issue. I can't help but agree.

At the same time, I would expect someone who works in animal rescue, and in and around shelters, to take a passionate stand on the issue, taking into account the hundreds, if not thousands of precious animals they see on their way to being euthanized every single day. I have often considered working as a volunteer at a local shelter, but I'll be honest with you....I don't think I could do it.

I don't think the statement:
Quote:
Millions of innocent animals die every year because of human ignorance, greed, vanity, and laziness.
.........was meant as an indictment of anyone, specifically, as much as it is a frank observation about our culture at large, and the filled-to-capacity status of animal shelters from sea to shining sea are evidence enough of that.

After all, you have made a conscious decision about your animals, and, as a responsible owner, you are aware of the special considerations that choice obligates you to consider, and for that you have my respect.

What is such an injustice is when people simply fail to recognize, or even worse, ignore their responsibility to the animal.
